I agree Ray, all a coil does is create a SPARK...nothing more. Accel and
MSD do it no better than a stock coil and yet the aftermarket coils seem to
have a much higher failure rate..go figure.

One of the reasons I participate in this list and other Dak forums is to
share the knowledge I've gained the hard way, long before there were Dakota
forums and mailing lists. A common misconception, promoted mostly by those
with something to sell, is that the stock ignition on Dakotas is not up to
the task. I would have to ask them to PROVE it! I have proven, at the
track, that the stock ignition is MORE than adequate. You will NOT gain
better performance from an aftermarket coil over a stock one in good
condition. Ditto for the controllers such as MSD, Jacobs and Accel (other
than for smoother running when the engine is COLD). I've compared them,
back to back, same day at the track and there is NO extra performance. I
no longer use them (they died on their own anyway) and still manage to run
13.50s (NA 318) while shifting at 6000 rpm and above. I also have two
friends running Vortec superchargers on 318's turning low to mid 12's with
the stock ignition. If you chose to believe me, save your money for
something that really helps. All your ignition system really needs is
fresh plugs, cap, rotor and good wires.
