I've never had anything contested before, but I'm pretty sure that you're
right on both accounts. The dealer tries to prove the failure was caused by
the aftermarket and the owner (you) tries to prove that the part just failed
because it was due or it was junk anyway.

Never had any warranty claims? Wow. I've had all sorts of stuff done under
warranty... trim pieces breaking, wheel bearing, ball joints, transmission,
driveshaft, the list goes on... I'm modified as well, and the dealer told
me all that mattered was that when they plugged their scantool in was that
it had to be a dodge program in the computer.
The dealership I go to has been excellent though, (plus, they're VERY heavy
into racing and love to help others) they lowered my truck (they were the
cheapest priced) and even helped me figure out my alignment to get the most
performance out of the drop while preserving tire wear.... I've got 1.5
degrees of negative camber on my front wheels and no tire wear issues at
all...they wear nice and even. :-)
