Basically, yes.

But my Pioneer DEH-P7000R that I bought at the end of 1999 was not "XM
Ready" but it was compatible with the XM tuner. Near as I can tell,
this is because the Pioneer add-on tuner (connects via their IP-Bus
proprietary system) speaks to the head unit in a language that it
understands, even though the head unit didn't have all of the fancy XM
features built in. (i.e. the head unit is able to address the XM
tuner like a cd changer)

I've since replaced my head unit with a new one (DEH-P7500MP), which
is "XM Ready" and that gave me some of the missing features and better
control.

... unless, of course, you're talking about a universal add-on that
has its own controller and interfaces (audio only) to the head unit by
a means other than FM modulation (i.e. RCA inputs, or RCA inputs via a
converter to the factory CD changer connector)
