3000 miles is a good number. It sounds like you are using non synthetic,
and doing short trip driving where the motor doesn't get a chance to get
fully up to temp. This often leads to sludge issues.

If this is the case, once a week or so, take it out where you can run it for
a 30 minute interval all at once. It is all the 5 minute trips around the
corner that will sludge you up.
