My 99 Dakota did not have the factory fog lights. I was/am more interested in
driving lights that help me see at night than in having fog lights that I can
only occasionally use so I purchased driving lights.
The ones I got were 3.5" in diameter, a little smaller than the factory lights.
I used a hole saw to cut out the blanks in the facia. The brackets that came
with the lights were just the right size to bolt to the bumper support right
above the holes in the facia and lined up perfectly.
Since I want them to go on and off with the high beams I used the wiring kit
that came with the lights and a relay I had kicking around. Since the
headlights always have power to them and the light switch/dimmer grounds them I
spliced a wire to the high beam wiring to ground the coil in the relay and turn
the driving lights on. I didn't even bother with a switch inside the cab. Now
every time I activate the high beams my driving lights are turned on. These
made a dramatic improvement in my overall ability to see at night. Combined
with the silverstar bulbs I now consider my lights to be more than adequate.
BTW, the wiring for the factory fog lights was tied back into the harnesses on
either side of the radiator. If you want a factory style instalation. Fogs can
be turned on when the parking or low beams are on and go off with high beams
just use the factory wiring. You will also need a relay to plug into the relay
panel under the hood (it's marked for the fog lights) and a factory headlight
switch that has the pull feature to activate them.
