What if you were to convert to a single oversized tire in the rear - Like some newer semis are doing? Think drag slicks... Seriously, wouldn't that lower your $$?

   Yep, they do indeed have a price scale, and its a doozy!
Fortunately(?) they will let you register a vehicle at any GVWR
you want (up to the published GVWR of the vehicle). When I
registered the Ram 3500 I did it for 9,000lbs which is 1,500lbs
below published GVWR, but more than I expect to ever use it for.
(Fortunately the GVWR does not affect towing, that's where I
expect to actually use the capabilities of the truck). Anyway,
even at only 9,000lbs, the registration ran me over $170. They
rape me silly on the thruway too with the tolls due to the dual
rear wheels - NY does not like trucks!
