I changed the oil again this past weekend on my 2000 4.7L. It was better
this time than last time, because I was prepared for the mess. I took
about 10 paper towels folded up and set them just behind that access
opening for the filter. I did go with the 2L soda bottle to see if that
would help... didn't help much this time, but after I was done I cut it up
so that it will work better next time. I only had about 3 or 4 drops of
oil drip down onto the frame and none on the floor. The rest of the oil
that dripped out of the filter all dripped onto the stack of paper towels. :-)

And probably mounted at an angle...

What were they thinking? I've changed the oil on my boat a bunch of times
(and aside from the fact that when you open the hatch the engine is
accessible on 3 sides...) and never dripped a single drop of oil out of the
filter when changing it because it mounts perfectly vertical.
