$1250 sounds about right for a chunk, gears and bearings.

On the why part:
My 99 9.25 spit part of a clutch plate out of the Sure-Grip, and took out
portions of 2 pinion teeth. I got lucky as it got spit out, and I was able
to finish the rest of the 1000 mile trip.

Inspection showed that several clutch plates had cracked. 1/2 of 1 plate
had worked itself out and gotten tossed. It apparently fell between the
ring and pinion while I was travelling at 65 mph (CLAAANG, CLUNK, CLUNK,
CLUNK...... then back to quite). Net result was 1 wasted Sure Grip
(clutches and spiders), 1 wasted ring and pinion.

I now have a Detroit and a LPW rear cover support plate.
