I think with the weight versus no weight thing, it's got to be the ball
joints, but that just doesn't make sense... you sure they're well
greased? how do their boots look, if you can even see them hiding
under the knuckle?

That really sounds like skipping teeth. maybe something is loose in
the mechanism that allows the teeth to walk away from each other
between the armature and the motor?
