I went through this recently. The easiest way I found was to use a pair of
expanding snap ring pliers. Place the tips down in the slot, squeeze the
handles and lift out the drive gear. The pliers place a very strong grip on
the gear so it's safe to bump it around and not worry about the gear falling
off. Easy to rotate this way also.
I have a 604 Comp. Cam and I could only get the gear slot to point to 4:15
or 5:50 (according to my digital watch). Seriously though, there was no 5
o'clock position for me (must be the cam).
