Gary,
The 2.2 engines are dependable. Since you went to allpar.com, you now know
the 2.2 is a 4cyl OHC version of the 225, and you know how dependable they
are.
I had a 81 Charger 2.2 with over 100k. Solid as a rock. Early models could
get a bit noisy, but they still ran well. I have a 92 Spirit in the
driveway-48k-and this engine is severely abused. It sits for long periods,
then gets pressed into service for a week or two, then sits. No complaints.
We've had a few of them without any problems.
They will make 300 HP without complaint.
IOW-treat it as if you had a 225 in there. No powerhouse in it's stock,
normally aspirated form, but it's a solid engine. They get abused due to
their bulletproof reputation.
You should be able to find lots of $500 beaters out there.
One question:don't you mean a 90 Shadow? They weren't made in 80. The reason
I say this is because I almost wrote you should be able to get something
newer than a 1980 model, then realized you said it was a Shadow.
Don't worry about the 2.2, it's a good engine.
