I briefly went LED a couple years ago, but quickly returned the bulbs
for two reasons. All elements in the bulbs were aimed straight ahead,
so they didn't illuminate the entire lighting fixture. In the tails,
they were actually difficult to see in daylight. Secondly, I couldn't
find out how to fix the flasher - with the tails in, it blinked fast
like a bulb was burned out; with the front signals in, it wouldn't even
blink, it just chattered.

My Dodge dealer thought I was on crack when I asked about an
electronically timed flasher (as did Napa, Champion and Checker) versus
a thermal unit, and I couldn't find any part numbers or workarounds
online aside from wiring a resistor in-line with the bulb. Since power
saving was 2/3 of my goal that wasn't a good option. I don't have
clear lenses, so appearance doesn't factor in - the other 1/3 was
safety/cool factor with the instant on/off of LEDs.

The only units I found at that time that would illuminate the entire
fixture were over $100 apiece, so I gave up on it. It looks like they
now sell a similar unit for $25, though....
<http://www.led.net/ds/aut1157/> Still steep, but far far more
reasonable.
