Magnacores and MSDs are popular. Really, any reputable wire in the
8mm-and-up range will do you just fine.

you want the factory service manual. someone here might have one from a
previous '97 of their own, or they can point out the "proper" place to get one.
I'm on a friend's computer and don't have my links, nor do I remember off the
top of my head. I also think this might be in the DML FAQ, come to think of
it.....

  yes indeed: <http://faq.dakota-truck.net/General/buy_fsm.html>

I run the SuperChips PCM reprogrammer - I have noticable seat-of-the-pants
improvement from factory to their 91 octane program, but I'd been running their
87 octane program for quite some time, and recently felt no difference at all
moving back to the 91.... But I've been driving [relatively] conservatively of
late, too.

I've never seen dyno results side-by-side-by-side, nor have I had the money
to do them myself, so I don't know what *real* difference it makes. I
personally think the SuperChips is worth it for the speedo correction and MIL
code reading alone and that the tuning is gravy =)

I just had a thought, though, after teasing you with all that: I think their
offering for the 3.9/5.2/5.9 is for '98 through '01 - do check on that....

you (or they) must be referring to the "death flash" that advances timing to
help with the ping..... this KRC article covers one possible solution if
that's what you're talking about
<http://www.krcperformance.com/newcontent/timing.html>

of course, a PCM flash will also rid you of that timing retard.

the higher octane took away power, when you were pinging. right....

anyway, to kill the ping without running Mobil 87 or others' 89, swap in a
180 degree thermostat and run Autolite 3923 plugs. Not the platinums - they
suck in a Magnum - just the normal coppers. The plugs alone fixed my ping
before I got the SuperChips - I still have a 180 t-stat waiting to go in....
Of course it's really not that big a deal to either always hit up Mobil for
their seeminly superior 87, or buy 89 anywhere else.
