I have read a number of articles that state a properly built 8 1/4 is good for
400-500 Hp. Remember, this was the stock rear end behind 340 and 360 Darts and
Dusters starting in 73, granted they were not the engines they were prior to 73
but they still were not slouches. There are also lots of Darts and Dusters
running 12's with 8 1/4's with no breakage issues today.

The 360 I am building for the Barracuda is in the 350 HP range, I feel quite
comfortable that the 8 1/4 will have a long and happy life.

An 8 3/4 is certainly stronger but the cost of obtaining one, then getting it
modified for the large bolt pattern or cutting down from B/C body size would
not
be the best use of my disposable cash. Especially considering that the 8 1/4
with a sure-grip diff was free and it only cost me less than $300 to change the
gears to 3.55 and replace all the bearings and seals.
