Hmmm, good point. :-) I just drained the radiator when I was
repairing the top end on the Ram. I don't recall now wether I
thought of the block drains or not, even if I had I probably would
have passed on them just to avoid yet another potential problem (the
block of the motor was a bit nasty, so who knows if they would
have stripped, rounded off, etc.) I did remove the block drains
on my '96 once, and as I recall that was no picnic, so who knows
what would have been in store on this older vehicle? Plus, what
with all the mud in the crankcase already, I wasn't terribly
concerned about a little more contamination. :-)

As a potential alternative to draining the block, would
draining the radiator and then spinning the water pump pulley
(perhaps with an electric motor) pull enough extra out of the
block to drop the coolant level below the heads? (I suppose
one would have to remove the thermostat first or maybe
disconnect a heater hose at the firewall and put the end
in a bucket)
