Engineers do this sort of thing to justify their jobs. Nevermind that there
was nothing wrong with the original configuration, they will change things
as often as possible so it seems as though they are doing something
constructive. I could give you many examples from just the cars my family
members have owned.

On engines with two sensors, you could just pull the connector off one
sensor and see if the temp gauge still works. That will also tell you which
is which.
