Check the fluid. Is it full? (fill if needed)
Is it reddish? (If not, swap out the fluid)
Does it smell burnt? (If so swap out the fluid)

If a fluid swap is required, let a shop that does trannies do it so they can
give you a look see while the pan is down.

Subject: DML: A-518 Tranny Slipping

Before I start freaking out and say my transmission is toast, anyone want to
put in a couple cents? Truck is a '92 Dakota, 5.2, 4x4 that just turned
over 50,000 miles. Tranny is the 518. I put a Trans-Go kit in at around
36,000 miles.

What is was doing: working great.

What it is now doing: slipping like crazy in 1st gear, as in to accellerate
reasonably I gotta spin it up to 3000+ RPM. This came totally out of the
blue..I was at a stop sign, driving across town to the hardware store, go to
drive through an intersection and I thought the transmission elves put a
5000 RPM stall converter in while I was stopped. Never done anything like
this at all in the past. Shifts normally after 1st gear, seems to work fine
after that.

I've been looking for an excuse to put a 5 speed in, however I didn't want
this to happen while I'm at school and my bank account is already
overdrawn..
