The Gibson exhaust is set up to be clamped, most cats are too, so
you can really go either way with it. A welded exhaust is generally
easier to seal against leaks, while a clamped exhaust is a bit easier
to install. As far as how long to wait before they get welded
(assuming you decide to go that route), it depends somewhat on
the exposure the system will see (rain/snow). If you will be
welding it, you want to do it before surface rust starts,
otherwise it will require more involved cleaning of the joints
before welding. So, depending on the conditions it will see, that
window could be anywhere from a few days to a few years. :-)
BTW, somehow I missed the fact that you have a V6, which
some DMLers have said didn't work too well with a 3" system, so
you might want to do some more research in that area. Unfortunately
(or is that "fortunately")? ;-) my experience is with the V8. So
you should probably also disregard my previous comments about how
the 3" Gibson sounds with/without a cat, since I was speaking about
a 318, and I'm not sure how the sound would translate to a V6.
Sorry about that!
