It's also worth adding that on mine (2000 4.7L) there is a little
plastic "door" that you take off to access it. If you're looking at it
from the bottom, it says "OIL FILTER ACCESS - 4.7L ONLY" or something to
that effect right next to the opening.
On my truck I can also see the oil filter if I look in at the correct
angle behind the front drivers side tire.
