It will kill some of the bottom end output (done that myself)...but
definitely will increase performance from 2800-4800rpm. I run my '97 V6
with a 2.5" custom built y-pipe, no cat, and a MagnaFlow TurboXL 32" muffler
(3" pipe out the back). Granted, the engine is also modified beyond factory
specs...but I had that setup on my original/stock cam'd V6 as well and the
performance did suffer from off-idle to about 2500-2800rpm (doesn't now
though).
Best best would be keeping a 3" CarSound Cat and your choice of muffler (for
sound output) with a 3" pipe.
Soundwise, no cat and just a muffler is loud (we have no sound restrictions
in my area of TX so it's not a problem)...check your local laws though.

Would a gutted cat and a straight though muffler kill my V6's low-end
torque? Would the cops be impressed with it's ability to make noise?

I would have a hollow shell of a converter if it were mine.. IMO.. The
best cat is an empty one.

Currently, on my 92 3.9L I'm running the stock 3" in/out cat to a Magnaflow
Performance muffler (the straight through kind) ending with a 2.5" tail
pipe. Is a 3" in/out Carsound cat the best performance option? Or would a
Catco cat do about the same? What would you do?
