Re: 100k = timing chain?

My 89 3.9 had 256,000 miles on it on the orignal timing chain when I sold the
truck. My philosophy has always been if it ain't broke don't fix it. Since
there is no maintainence interval for the chain I wouldn't bother unless there
is another reason to tear into the fron of the engine. I wouldn't expect
anything to be worn out in an engine with only 100,000 miles on it unless it
was abused.

Don't recall what the acceptable range would be for the 3.9/5.2/5.9 but in most
FSM's there is a procedure for checking for excessive stretch. You remove the
distributor cap and rotate the engine forward until the rotor moves. Then turn
the engine backwards until the rotor moves. The amount you turn the engine
backwards before the rotor moves is the slack in the chain and there is usually
a max amount allowed.
