I always subscribe to the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" philosophy. There is
still a significant amount of work yet to go to get the timing cover off to do
the chain/gears. So unless you have 150,000+ miles or the chain is making noise
or you beat on your truck I wouldn't bother. FWIW, my 89 3.9 had 256,000 miles
on it when I sold it and I had never been inside the engine.
My guess it would start to leak past the seal next and it would get real noisey
before it would get to the point of grenading or freezing up.
