On a "performance note", some have opted for same size shoes (the larger
ones) on both front and rear for maximum contact - this isn't required for
daily use, but does help in extreme braking conditions (track/offroad/road
racing). Down side of this is that you have to buy two sets...or find a
brand that includes all large shoes (Bendix and Raybestos have this option -
not common though).

The shoe pointing to the front of the vehicle is self energizing, that is
once it comes in contact with the drum it wants grab and more. The rear shoe
does not do this. The shorter shoe goes to the front so the braking action
between each shoe is balanced out.
