Best thing to try is to test the field - voltage should jump to about
15.5-16v. If it doesn't move more than a few 1/10th's...then you have a
problem.
Other optional check is to hold at 1500, turn on ALL accessories (wiper
included) and watch the voltage...it should stay close to where it was
before the accessories were turned on.

Thanks all for the replies.
My memory must be running down :-( I could have sworn that it used to show
around 14 to 14.3 volts. It has not been one of the readouts that I have
recorded or paid particular attention to.
I took readings at idle, around 650 rpm, with no load and with load.
I also took readings by taking rpm up to around 2000. Even took readings
with two different pcms.
Back to the trouble-shooting drawing board :-P
