I know he had some wire separating looms he had bought from someone like
Accel. I haven't peaked under his hood to look at his wires, so I don't
know if he has them routed poorly and it could be causing crossfiring to
occur. But I'll make sure to look the next time he is over wrenching at
my house.

In addition to going to a 180 degree tstat, you can try adding
a bottle of Redline Water Wetter (or an equivalent product)
to the rad mix.

Also, there is a tsb about rerouting the plug wires. Basically,
the important suggestion is to wires 5 & 7, 4 & 8 at least
1" apart and the coil wire at least 1" away from all other wires.
He may need to get some wire separators or use some zip ties
to do this.
