Removing rubber trim strips?

well, i have starting to remove things from the body to prepare it for painting. I
have the factory paint stripes off. used several razor blades but found that just
pulling the stripes off will also get most of the adhesive off too. the razor blades
end up leaving a thin layer of adhesive that must be removed later. ( i used 3M
Adhesive/Marker Remover which is mostly made of naptha. that works great! )

i also removed the fender flares.

now on to those 4" wide, rubber trim strips that run down the sides on the Gen-II trucks.
anyone have a good idea of how to take them off? I was planning on using a 1" wide
putty knife. someone have another suggestion? i dont want to scratch the body too
badly or it will be hard to fix later.
