Dakota Question

I am a new subscriber but I have been reading the posts for a while. I
really enjoy the site and hope to be able to contribute in a positive way.
I have a question that is pretty pressing though. I have a '99 Dakota,
5.2L, Club Cab, 4x2, with Flowmaster and K&N Filtercharger. Two months ago,
my check engine light came on and I tried to take the battery cable off and
reset it. This has happened before and when I took the cable off and let it
sit for a few minutes, reconnected and the MIL was off. I tried this method
and it worked the first time when I put the cable back on. When I turned
the switch off, then turned it back on, the MIL came back on. Last week, I
went to Autozone and Advance Auto to get them to pull the code that caused
this light to come on. When both of them hooked up their OBD II scanners,
no codes came up. I was glad about this but that danged MIL light stayed
on. I then went to get the vehicle inspected. I live in NC and since my
county requires more than the standard safety inspection, I was hooked up to
the inspection shop's computer. They couldn't pass the inspection with the
MIL on and there were no codes showing up in the box where the codes
normally show up. Something funny though, the computer showed the Catalyst,
the O2 sensor, and the O2 heater to be "Not Connected" but did not show any
codes. I called 2 dealership service departments and they both told me
essentially the same thing. They both said that I had to drive the thing
for 50-100 miles so that the codes would show up after I disconnected the
battery. Well I did, went back to Advance this morning and when they hooked
up, it didn't show any codes again!! This afternoon, I called a good
independent Dodge mechanic in the area and he said that the PCM may be bad
and he has seen this before on a '98 that he worked on. I am not doubting
him but before I spend the money I really don't have, I wanted to be sure
that this was the only possible thing it could be. What do you think?? Any
help would really be appreciated! Thanks again!
