Colorado is a desert, so count on it being dry for the most part,
especially in July. If we were going to be getting in to the spring snow
melt, we might find some mud, but chances are slim. The mud tires
wouldn't hurt, but they will kill your gas mileage.
The terrain we'll be on will probably be mostly hard packed dirt and rock.
We might have to do a couple of small stream crossings, but nothing deep
or mucky enough to need mud tires. If you feel like getting more extreme,
there's some pretty good rock crawling to be found. I'm just going to be
sticking to the easier scenic trails.
Personally, I'll probably be getting a set of Bridgestone AT Revos to
replace the factory Goodyears (can you believe they'll be 5 years old?).
Our 2001 has the weird 265/70R16 size, and the Revos look like the best
value for the money in that size.
