It is most certainly a classic. The 318 was introduced in 1957,
basically a bored out 273, as an "A" engine. The "LA" series of
engines were an improvement on the A engines, mostly due to some
significant lightening of the block and heads (that's what the "L"
stands for - "light" or "lightweight"). Anyway, the LA version of
the 318 came out in 1968 and continued (with various improvements
throughout the years of course) until 1992 when it was replaced with
the "Magnum" version, the main differences being improved heads, a
hydraulic roller cam, and multiport fuel injection. (throttle body
fuel injection was available on some late 80s and early 90s "LA" 318s).
Anyway, the 318 is probably older than many people here on the list,
so I'd say it qualifies as being a classic. (However, if you're just
talking about the Magnum 318 as being around since 1992, then no, I
wouldn't consider that a classic.) IMHO, somewhere around 20-30 years
is required to obtain "classic" status. :-) (Then again, sometimes it
depends on the vehicle, for example many people considered the '87 Buick
Grand National to be a classic well before they started nearing the
20 year mark.)
