    Its definitely a good idea to check for a ground, but before I did
that, I would disconnect the trailer from the truck and check the 7 way
plug on the truck. Since your problem is that the running lights are
doing the opposite of what they are supposed to be doing, just take 30
seconds to verify that the running lights (pin 3, usually brown) have
no power when the headlights are off and +12v (or so) when the headlights
are on. However slim, there's always a chance the truck is wired wrong,
and since it is so super easy to check, I'd do that before chasing down
a ground problem.
