In theory a spacer adds volume to the intake which can have a tuning effect on
the air velocity entering the engine. On the 318/360 magnum you already have a
huge plenum and the spacer doesn't have enough volume to have an effect. The
4.0 Jeep engine I believe still uses a log style manifold so a spacer could be
more effective. In the carburator world they are very common and do make a
difference to someone trying to squeeze the last couple of horsepower out of an
engine.
