   This has already been answered satisfactorily by a few folks, but I
thought I would just chime in with the following:

  In *theory*, going to the higher temp thermostat would improve your
fuel economy, because a hotter engine is, in general, more efficient,
however as others have noted, this theory doesn't always translate into
practice. The difference may be so small that you don't notice it,
and there may be other factors favoring the cooler thermostat. Also,
if you are on the verge of pinging, going to the hotter thermostat
would exacerbate the problem and you will most definitely see worse
fuel economy in that situation.
