I'm looking for options to regain some power and mileage that was lost when
my dealer errantly re-flashed my PCM. I'd prefer not to be leashed to 93
octane, but at this point I'd accept almost any option.
As far as I can tell, MP doesn't make a PCM for this truck ('99 5.2L, Auto,
4x4)?#@.&?!
I'm thinking about getting a Hyper Tech programmer, or less likely a Superchips
version, to possibly replace the new flash with a better one. All of the
reports on the DML archives for Hypertech and Superchips ICON are from 1999-2000,
does anybody still use them? Are there any reports from folks who've used
them, successfully or otherwise?
I thought about hunting down a used PCM from a wrecking yard in hopes of
finding one that hasn't been flashed, but it would still have to be flashed
to input the VIN and mileage. I can't guarantee that the ham fisted guy
who screwed up my original PCM wont do it to the used one too.
Any other options out there?
Why did I do it? Well, since my Dakota was just about done with the service
contract, I took it to the dealer to get the A/C serviced and resolve a shudder
that seems to occur under load. While they told me they were only going
to diagnose, and call me with the repair costs, it turns out they did a little
more.
They didn't fix any of my problems, but they DID re-flash the PCM with the
dreaded "anti-pinging" program!!! It was running fine before, now it feels
like they stole about 30 ponies. I lost about 2-3 MPG as well. They offered
up a new PCM as a fix, but it made no difference - they claim it automatically
gets the new flash when it's installed.
