I've seen this happen before, it's caused by fumes from battery acid.
Happens when stored due to lack of air flow around the battery. If the hood had
been open about a foot the temperature change will cause enough air flow to
usually keep the fumes from condensing.
Also ZINC is highly reactive to acid fume. If the 2 pins were actually
touching each other, they would have set up a galvanic reaction with each other.
