Currently the waste is hazardous for many thousands of years so long term
storage is necessary. However, technology has been developed (and then
cancelled) that will allow the still fissionable leftover uranium (what takes
many thousands of years to degrade) to be reprocessed back into viable fuel
rods. This process yields short lived waste that's only hazardous for a few
hundred years.

If you're interested, give this a read, it's quite informative.
