For all those interested, I managed to recover and reinstall my headliner.
I ended up doing it myself to save some cash. There are a few places online
that sell "kits" to recover your headliner. The cheapest one I found was
$39.99.
I ended up getting the headliner material from a local fabric store called
Hancock Fabrics for $8.97 per yard. If you don't have a store local to you,
you can pick up the material at:
Or you can go to http://www.hancockfabrics.com and do a search for
'headliner'. They have a few different colors to choose from. One yard of
fabirc is enough for a GenII regular cab pickup. You'll have to measure your
truck if you have anything different. My guess is that one yard will work
for any regular cab Dakota, but you can always ask for a few more inches
just to be safe.
As far as glue goes, I went with the 3M general trim adhesive in a 18.1oz
can. I picked it up a Wal-Mart for $8.88. I found the same stuff at
Autozone for $12.99 so you might want to avoid getting it there.
There are instructions all over the net on steps to do the actual
replacement, so I won't go in to any of that. I will say that it is
something most everyone should be able to do. It's a one man(woman) job to
get the headliner out, but it's a two person job to get it back in. You
could probably get it in yourself, but you'll want to be extra careful after
you've gone to all the trouble to replace it.
Some things to keep in mind: I used the entire can of trim adhesive so you
may need more if you are doing a CC or QC. Keep your hands CLEAN when
putting the new fabric on. Have someone else help when attaching the new
fabric to the board because once you stick it, it's stuck. Take your time
attaching the fabric around the dome light. I have a few flaws in mine
where I didn't get it quite as smooth as I wanted. They're probably only
noticeable to me though.
Total on the job was $8.97 + $8.88 = $17.85. Not too bad. We'll see how
long it stays up. Sorry for the long post. I thought this might help
someone out when searching the archives in the future.

I noticed back at the beginning of the year that the cloth headliner was
failing to stick
to the backer board in a few places. Mainly around the rear window area.
I searched the DMLA but saw nothing about this. Does anyone know how to
repair the
headliner? Does someone make a repair kit?
I thought perhaps a syringe filled with some epoxy might work. I could poke
tiny (
un-noticable? ) holes with the syringe into the headliner and squeeze out
some epoxy.
