I think you have Ohio confused with Illinois, Jon heh. The Turnpike is
set up like the Thruway. Pay when you get on pay when you get off.
Illinois is finally coming up with a bothless toll system they call
"open tolling". The sonsabiches are spending gazillions to install
IPASS (Illinois' version of EZPASS) recievers/transcievers above the
roads where toll booths once were. Hmmm - seems to me a waste of money.
The IL tollways were never meant to be long term anyway. They were
pitched to the public to be something like a 5-6 year toll program to
help offset road maintiance costs. Yeah. Right... I don't know what
non-IPASS users will do. I looked into getting one but decided against
it since I do little traveling in IL anymore. But they jacked up the
cash toll rates to DOUBLE what they used to be. IPASS users still have
the standard rates.
Anyway...
Yeah.. Ohio... arm pit of the United States...
(no I won't apologize to any people on The List who may have the
unfortunate luck to live in Ohio)
I've had generally good experiances along the Ohio Turnpike. However if
you happened to be in the area of mile marker 89 and 90 eastbound... the
summer of 2004... well maybe you didn't have a nice a time :D hehe
Ohio Troopers are as plentiful as flies on road kill and are just as
nasty. Radar detectors are a MUST in that state. Better off to stay
5-6 MPH above the limit and no more. One summer on the way out to the
BBQ I counted 6 troopers within a few miles of eachother... each with a
customer on the side.
They have Sunoco gas stations primarily, with their half dozen blends of
gasoline that range from 85 octane up to stuff thats damned near CAM2
race fuel - with a couple Mobil and BP's. Steer clear of the Hardees
fast food joints they have at the waysides. Two years in a row I
stopped at one (may have been the same one - who knows) and two years in
a row I experianced "digestive tract problems" after eating there.
Never agian.
Indiana is OK to travel to until you get to Gary and then cross over via
the Skyway. Last time I went through the Skyway it was still ripped up
for construction and was an absolute nightmare. If you can - avoid
Gary/Chicago at ALL COSTS. If you have to go through there - best times
are before 8 am, between 12 noon and 3 pm, and after 8 pm in the
evening. Anything else is parking lot conditions usually.
