I was about to post basically the same thing. :-) If the bumper is
well constructed and as nice as it looks in the pics, $400 seems like a
very good price. Usually custom bumpers like that are twice as much. I
can certainly understand wanting to justify using the tools at your
disposal, but with the price of steel these days, be aware that you
probably aren't going to end up saving a great deal of money. Last I
checked, a 4x8 sheet of 22 gauge was going for about $80, so 11 gauge
is going to be considerably more than that, not to mention the thicker
pieces for the frame and the tubing for the top. Then there's the aspect
of having to engineer the thing and find the time to put it together.
I'm sure it can be done cheaper than $400, I guess the question becomes
wether the extra work and time is worth the money savings, which I would
guess would be $100-150 at most.

Don't get me wrong; I'm all for custom fabrication :-) but I've got
to agree with Tom on this one. It might be just because of the number of
projects I've got piling up and the decreasing amount of time in which
to do them, but if it were me, I'd be inclined to just plunk down my
$400 and call it a day. :-)
