Ok, I finally got a chance to look in to this yesterday.

I checked the CV shafts first. I can rotate them maybe 1/16" or so, and they
have about 1/16" of an in lateral play as well. Both seem to be about the
same. And Tom's right, they're splined in to the diff, not bolted on, so
removing them would be harder than on the older models.

Then I checked the driveshaft. This has a little more latteral play than the
CV shafts, maybe 1/8" or so. With the transfer case in 2 and trans in N, I
can rotate the front driveshaft about 1/4" and the rear driveshaft hardly at
all. Is this just taking up slack in the transfer case?

Then I went for a trip around the block and found something interesting: the
noise it was making is gone. It does have some drivetrain noise when the
transfer case is engaged, but it is no longer making the clanking and
crunching noises that it was last week.

I guess I'll have to wait and see if the noise comes back. If it doesn't, it
may remain a mystery.
