Out of interest, what is the average cost for a Wix or Purolator

You do take something of a risk with extended oil change intervals
unless you do oil testing. What a lot of the fleet type oprations
will do is to take regular oil samples and have them tested. They
use the testing data to determine when it is time to change the
oil as opposed to a time or mileage interval. That way you can
be sure you're getting the maximum value out of the oil, not changing
perfectly good oil too soon or waiting too long and running with
contaminated/"used up" oil. Of course, for the average Joe to get
an oil test is around $20 a pop, which is about the same price as
changing the oil and filter (or thereabouts) so it usually doesn't
make sense for a regular vehicle to use an oil test to determine
oil change interval. For a tractor trailer or heavy equipment though
which may measure its oil changes in gallons instead of quarts, that's
another story. :-)
As far as the filters go with extended oil change intervals, I
would imagine that as the filter gets clogged, the bypass will start
to open and the extra junk is going to start getting picked up on
an oil test. So, you could probably use testing to determine filter
change interval as well, but the problem with that is a filter may
clog quickly, and you might run a few thousand miles with basically
no filtration until your next oil test, which probably isn't a good
thing.
