It was actually the secondary wire going from the coil to the distributor
(not the primary 12v wire going to the coil). It was touching the valve
cover causing arcing which will ruin the coil. In my case, it still sent
voltage to the spark plugs but not enough for combustion.

Somewhere yesterday I was reading about a problem a little worse than that,
same thing I had happen to me last month. The person found that the two wire
harness running up to the coil was touching the engine some place and was
shorting out due to heat. It was stated that that fries your coil.
