Sounds like the pump is seizing up. Yes, they can stop an engine.

General mechanical question.
Yesterday the Windstar started squeaking from the water pump. Later that
day the van would just stall after a few loud squeaks but would restart.
Is it possible that a pump that's going bad could have enough resistance to
stall an engine?
