I have a quick question regarding steering boxes for 98 - 99 5.9 V8 4WD
Daks/Durangos.

I am looking to transplant a steering box in my Jeep Cherokee. It has
been done by others in the past but some of the information is confusing
as to which is the correct box to use for this transplant.

Going from NAPA's online database...

My 98 Jeep Cherokee has the following box:
Item#: NSP277582
Price: $179.00
Core: $222.22
Attributes:
Line Thread Size:M18x1.5; M16x1.5
# of Mounting Holes:3
Input Shaft Diameter:3/4"
Output Shaft Diameter:1.25"
# of Turns Lock to Lock:3 3/8

98 Dakota with 5.9 and 4WD with snow plow package:
Item#: NSP277580
Price: $179.00
Core: $222.22
Attributes:
Line Thread Size:M18x1.5; M16x1.5
# of Mounting Holes:3
Input Shaft Diameter:3/4"
Output Shaft Diameter:1.25"
# of Turns Lock to Lock:3 3/8
Type of Hose Ports:O Ring

98 Dakota with 5.9 and 4WD without snow plow package:
Item#: NSP277588
Price: $229.00
Core: $111.11
Attributes:
Line Thread Size:M18x1.6
# of Mounting Holes:3
Input Shaft Diameter:3/4"
Output Shaft Diameter:1.25"
# of Turns Lock to Lock:2 15/16
Type of Hose Ports:O Ring

99 Dakota with 5.9 and 4WD (only box offered and no snow plow package
mentioned):
Item#: NSP277588
Price: $229.00
Core: $111.11
Attributes:
Line Thread Size:M18x1.6
# of Mounting Holes:3
Input Shaft Diameter:3/4"
Output Shaft Diameter:1.25"
# of Turns Lock to Lock:2 15/16
Type of Hose Ports:O Ring

So is the 99 box a snow plow box? Or is the description for the same
part in 98 the correct description? I'm being told the 99 box is
correct and the 98 that has the Snow Plow Package option would be
virtually identical to my existing box. Besides lock to lock the
Dak/Rangos box are supposed to have a larger piston, but I don't know if
both boxes are that way or just one. If anyone has expertise and can
shed some light I would appreciate it.

2nd question. I know a few that bought the 99 box (which has a quicker
lock to lock) and some have had to open the box up and remove a 1/4"
spacer to achieve a little more lock to lock travel so they can max out
their Jeep's steering. How can this be? Some of these are custom
steering setups (much like mine) so that may partially explain it, but
not all of them. Although the lock to lock is quicker, I figured it had
more to do with the internal gearing and that the pitman arm would move
the same amount regardless of which box.

I believe that is all the questions I have...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
