Not a problem! Maybe it will spur some additional steering box
conversation.
I'm not a mechanic but... On my Jeep the box is mounted so the pitman
arm is on the bottom (I assume it is on your Dak as well). Roughly
above the shaft the top plate should have 4 normal bolt heads plus a set
screw with a lock nut. Chances are your box was preassembled with too
much preload on the sector shaft and it is affecting the box's
performance.
What many in my Jeep world have done is to loosen the nut and turn the
set screw a 1/4 turn and snug the locknut back down. Take a ride around
the block and keep adjusting until you find the level of box sensitivity
that you desire. Many friends of mine do this adjustment yearly to keep
their gear box performing to their liking. Technically there is
supposed to be a measurable amount of off center drag, like 4 inch
pounds or some such figure, but I have yet to run into someone that
actually tried to measure the adjustments.
Failing this, you probably have some other problem with the rebuilt box.

Subject: RE: DML: Steering Box questions 98 - 99
Hate to steal your thread but,
I just replaced the steering box on my dak '97 4x4.
The old one had alot of slop in it. I also went ahead and replaced the
entire
front end. Ball joints and tire rods. I now have a problem with the new
box.
When your sitting still it feels like the power steering is out. And
it's
really hard to turn,
if I roll forward while turning it turns fine. Is there a pressure
adjustment on the pump?
The old box worked fine other than the slop. So I'm thinking that the
new
box may have something wrong with it. It's tight but, it feels like the
PS
pump doesn't have enough pressure.
Just wondering if anyone else has had a simular problem.
The fluid is full as well. Some times it works better than others.
Thanks,
Hop
