'03s have this "self-stopping" nut as well. Took me a while to figure it
out the first time I encountered it.

It's that "compress the shock" part that's a lot easier if you can let
the suspension go to full droop.

Not noticeably. I changed shocks on both my '99 and my '03 and they were
pretty much the same.
