Check the fan clutch first...they're known for going out like that.

Subject: DML: Getting Hot
My '96 318 water temp gauge has recently been hanging around the mid point
and slightly higher when idling for more then a couple minuets. The
radiator is full so I assume the thermostat is stuck, the fan clutch is bad,
clogged radiator or the water pump itself but it sounds normal and not
leaking.
How would I check these things out?
Thanks,
James
