Holy crap, I hate hearing all that crap that you guys have to go through for
a worthless smog test. It is nothing but a ploy to make people trade in
their cars for newer cars. There is absolutely no proof that smog testing
cars has made the air one bit better. It is nothing more than a tax. Heck,
for one lousy ppm, you have used a zillion ppm driving around trying to fix,
how does that make any sense to air pollution? Sorry guys, I just think its
big brother getting in our cars and lives.

Valve?

How about the ignition system, plugs, wires, cap, and rotor?
A slight misfire would send the HC's up.
Being in California you should have access to street legal racing fuel.
Like Cam2 GT unleaded.
It is Oxygenated, and will burn more completely due to it's lower boiling
points (distillation curve).
I always fill up with Ultra before smog tests.
If you have a low temp thermostat swap it out for a stock one.
Good luck.
