Either 1971 or 1972 was the 1st year of low compression
and the smog(air) pumps were introduced just a year or
so earlier.. I'm convinced that my old hi po 390 in my
old '61 Starliner and the 428 SCJ in my '69 Fastback
Mustang had better tailpipe emissions than most of the
earlier versions of Emissions loaded vehicles. I don't
know about todays All computerized and injected
engines, but the early 70's thru the mid 80's vehicles
were a "costly to the consumer" joke. I had a '72 New
Yorker that I bought new in 72 and it was awful. It would
get 6 MPG on its best days and wouldn't turn the tires
on loose gravel and would do all of 110 on top end.
I kept it just 9 months and traded it off. (It was a 440).
