Looks like it's not a good week for smog testing.
My '95 V6 (142,700 miles) just failed its test as well, I'll list the
details below. They tell me it needs a new catalytic converter, for
starters. That was replaced 6 years and 61,000 miles ago.
Unfortunately, there's only a 5 year warranty on the $525 replacement
part, I think this time I'll just go with the $80 one at Autozone with
the lifetime warranty. That was an expensive lesson.
Here are the other ideas I have. First, I don't think they warmed it up
before testing, unless they think just letting it idle is sufficient.
The odometer only had 1 more mile on it after the test than it did
before. Ambient temperature today is +3C (37F). Add that to the fact
that it had been sitting in the driveway since December 21, and I think
they should have done more of a warm up (unfortunately that didn't occur
to me until I got home).
Next thought is the oil. That was changed 1778 miles ago on October 20.
I checked it before taking it in, and the level was up, but it did
look fairly dark. I'll probably change that as well before the re-test.
Anything else?
Here are the numbers:
driving limit idle limit
HC ppm 83 (Fail) 52 115 (Pass) 200
CO % 0.42 (Fail) 0.29 0.51 (Pass) 1.00
NO ppm 1078 (Fail) 735 N/A N/A
RPM 1792 (Valid) 612 (Valid)
Dilution 14.8 (Valid) 14.1 (Valid)
Thanks.
