Whoops, that's not a hall effect sensor. Hall effect sensors use a
semiconductor to detect magnetic fields instead of a coil. You
could run a current through a coil, and use a hall effect sensor to
detect the magnetic field from the coil.

Hmmm, I can't remember if there's a particular name for the coil
type other than pickup coil or inductive pickup.

As a side, a cool thing about hall effect sensors is that they can
detect static magnetic fields. This allows measurement of DC
current, for example.
